Your residents deserve the best possible support that you are able to give them in promoting the standard of their oral health, so they can enjoy a better quality of life whilst in your care.
The aging process is no excuse for dental and oral neglect of our elderly community in care. Proper and regular oral care - will see to it that many senior citizens who have their ‘own’ teeth will perfectly continue to use their set of teeth for the rest of their lives.
You will find it, ever so much easier to meet your responsibility of raising standards of oral health amongst your residents if you have a sound Dental and Oral care policy in place to foster predictable delivery of oral care.

For instance our qualified dental nurses also have qualifications and work experience in the - care sector. We have an excellent record and a keen interest in helping care homes get it right, as regards your capabilities to deliver optimum oral care.

Tips for good dental care for the elderly
For Denture wearers
- Newly Fitted dentures often feel uncomfortable and strange but after 2 weeks of continuous wear, much of the discomfort will disappear.
- It is preferable that Dentures are not worn at bed time because this may cause a sore mouth which may lead to thrush infection.
- Dentures should be cleansed thoroughly, at least once a day preferably at night time with a clean denture brush and cleansing detergent such as liquid soap, followed by rinsing in clean water.
- When dentures are not worn, they should always be soaked in a ‘denturecleansing solution’ such as ‘stearadent’ or a suitable alternative.
- Rinsing dentures thoroughly after all meals is beneficial for good oral health.
- The use of a denture fixative (polygrip, Fixodent etc) is advised to correct minor problems of denture looseness and food getting stuck under dentures.
For Natural teeth
- Elderly persons who have their own teeth (natural) are particularly prone to things going wrong in their mouths for a variety of reasons, such as: - dry mouth (this encourages decay to set in)- exposed roots (theses tend to decay rather easily) - difficulty to self care (poor oral hygiene and bad breath will occur rather easily).
- Thorough tooth brushing twice daily -In the mornings before breakfast and just before bedtime.
- Tooth brushing ought to be done be with the use of a fluoride containing toothpaste. Higher strength toothpastes are now obtainable by prescription for use for persons who are prone to tooth decay, such as the elderly in care.
- Tooth brushing should preferably be carried out by the carer or at the very least, be supervised by the carer as frequent as possible.
- The avoidance of sugary snacks as best as is possible. And their intake should be restricted to meal times.
- The use of sweeteners as an alternative to sugar - for use in tea, coffee and other beverages where the use of sugar is customary; will help in preventing tooth decay.
- The chewing of sugar-free gum is very helpful in preventing tooth decay.
- Teeth with dental decay should be filled as soon as possible to prevent worsening.
- At the very least – there should be one dental checkup a year carried out on persons in care.
